Former U.S. President Bill Clinton in Potočari today at the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica, recalled that 20 years ago, more than 8,000 men and boys were killed in the genocide.
“This terrible fact, finally moved all members of NATO to support the United States to do what was clearly necessary to instigate peace talks and that BiH once again take the path of normal life,” said Clinton.
He added that he is very grateful to the people who worked to stop the war, to stop the killing, all the people who have worked on peace-building.
“20 years later, I am grateful that BiH remains peaceful country. I am grateful that it is closer to the EU membership, that it participates in peacekeeping missions in Afghanistan and elsewhere,” said Clinton.
He pointed out that, “on behalf of my country, and from the bottom of my heart, I love this place.”
“I never want to see such a place of mass killing, not even thousands of miles away. But the world is still dominated by war, killings based on ethnicity, race, religion,” said Clinton.
“I plea with you, do not let this memorial to innocent boys and men to be just a memory of a tragedy.
I ask you for this to be a sacred place,” said Clinton.
